Wheelchair Basketball Provincial Teams
Ontario wheelchair basketball athletes have the opportunity to play competitively while representing the province at various national events every season. Both our junior and women’s provincial programs are led by qualified, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable head coaches and assistant coaches tasked with overseeing athlete development and program growth.
Junior Provincial Program
The Ontario Junior Provincial Program operates on a four-year competition cycle leading up to the Canada Winter Games in the final year of the quadrennial.
Years 1 & 2 – Junior East & West Regional Championships
Year 3 – Junior National Championships
Year 4 – Canada Winter Games
The next Canada Winter Games will be held in Red Deer, Alberta in 2019. In order to be eligible for the 2019 Canada Games, junior athletes must be born in or after 1995.
Each year, athletes will have the opportunity to try out for the junior provincial team in order to represent Ontario at the season’s regional/national championships. Tryout details & selection criteria will be communicated to athletes and coaches prior to camps.
Head Coach: Paul Bowes
Assistant Coaches: Christina Swett, Chris Chandler, Jesse McNalley
The Ontario Women’s Provincial Program brings together girls and women from across the province with the intent of fostering competition, development, leadership, and camaraderie among female wheelchair basketball players.
Team Ontario competes every year in the CWBL Women’s National Championships against other women’s club teams and provincial teams from across Canada. Development-identified female athletes are also encouraged to participate in the Défi Sportif, an annual multi-sport tournament held in Québec, as an opportunity to further their development and help strengthen the next generation of Ontario wheelchair basketball players.
